Text Box: A HELPING HAND FROM GLANZ PHC           Issue 116         October, 2009 Fall Maintenance It may seem a little early, but the temperature thinks fall is here. Last night I smelled a fire from someone’s fireplace. That means it’s time once again for some of those change-of-season maintenance tasks. First, if you are going to have a fire in your fireplace, I hope you had the chimney checked. Sometimes animals build nests on top of the flue, which can cause the chimney to not draw properly. If your chimney is not a double-lined metal type, such as is being installed today, the mortar between the joints in the chimney needs to be checked to make sure the integrity of the chimney is sound. This is a job for a professional. Louisville has many fine chimney sweeps, and you should contact one. Of course, this time of year is their busiest, so don’t be surprised if you have to wait a while. Then, put this on your list of things to have done during the summer, so you won’t have to wait next fall. Second, you need to disconnect all hoses from your sil faucets. Even if you have a frost-proof sil faucet, it can freeze if the hose is left attached. We have two or three customers a year whose faucet freezes, and they are upset because it is supposed to be frost-proof. If you disconnect the hose, it will be. Otherwise, you are at Mother Nature’s whim, and she has been very whimsical lately. Third, it is time to turn on your humidifier, if you have one. Your pets, your sinuses, and your wood furniture will all appreciate it. If you do not know how to turn it on, give us a call. We’ll be glad to take care of it for you.
